Most database, word processing and spreadsheet programs provide the option to save a document in another format for compatibility across platforms and applications. The CSV, or comma-delimited, format contains a series of data fields in quotation marks separated by commas. Data, specifically numbers containing leading zeroes such as those for ZIP codes, lose the original field formatting when converted into this file format. Convert any fields containing numbers into a text format before converting to a CSV file to ensure Mac applications (such as iWork Numbers) imports the correct sequence.
Aug 29, 2011 - Assuming you have a valid/consistent CSV file, create a new workbook and then choose File -> Import. The first option on the list is 'CSV file'. In order to let Numbers accept comma-separated CSV data, you need to temporarily change your system's number format in System.

When you have finished, click OK to return to the Import Data dialog box. Do one of the following: To Do this Import the data to the current sheet Click Existing sheet, and then click OK. Import the data to a new sheet Click New sheet, and then click OK. Excel adds a new sheet to your workbook, and automatically pastes the external data range at the upper-left corner of the new sheet.
